Back in 1987, scandals rocked the political and religious scenes, resulting in once high and mighty leaders being brought to their knees. Our 1987 Christmas card parodies poor old Santa in a similar predicament.

Christmas Card Flashback 1986

The Iran–Contra affair was in full swing back in 1986, with Israel shipping arms to Iran, with the full backing of the US government. The thought kept running through my mind of Reagan not actually knowing what was going on, in kind of that Emily Litella way. So, when I was at Howell's Crafts (when it was in NW Portland) looking for Christmas supplies, I ran across some doll parts, and there in front of me were the 'arms' ready for shipping. Real arms. Well, doll arms. Why not send a few to family and friends? I glued the actual arm to the card.

Christmas Card Flashback 1985

'We Are The World' took the world was released in March of 1985. The historic event brought together some of the most famous artists in the music industry at the time. What a great chance to do some caricatures all in one place for one cause - my Christmas Card!! Of course I had to revise the lyrics to fir the occasion. We are the Elves!

Christmas Card Flashback 1984

For those old enough to remember, Oregon had the distinct honor of being home to the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and his followers, known as Rajneeshees. They lived in Eastern Oregon, where they had bought a ranch just outside of Antelope, Oregon, known for years as "The Big Muddy". While Oregon is home to a lot of um... unique individuals, this one took over the news in the 80's like no other. And one stand out trait of the Rajneeshees is that all their clothing was red.

Christmas Card Flashback 1983

There was a lot of talk about missiles in 1983 - Reagan's Star Wars initiative had gotten underway earlier in the year and the movie The Day After had aired on November 20th - right before Thanksgiving. You remember? It was a graphic, disturbing film about the effects of a devastating nuclear holocaust on small-town residents of eastern Kansas. How Christmassy! So, to add a little Leverenz-type cynicism to the atmosphere, I used a 'missile' type theme for our card.

Christmas Card Flashback 1981

Ryan was five and we spent a lot of time drawing together, so it was natural for us to use his design on our card for 1981. Not bad for a five year old, eh?
