I was pretty young, but one of the first time you feel a sense strength moving you toward manhood is when you pay your own way. When I was in 6th grade, my parents gave me a two options, 1. get your haircut the way when want it cut, on our dollar. 2 pay for your own haircut and you can have it cut they way you want it. Sound simple enough but it was a defining moment for a 11 year old in 1966. Directly I got my first newspaper route, earned my own money and then would take the bus to downtown Portland from the Hollywood District and have my haircut at Moler Barber College on SW 3rd the way i wanted it cut, for 50¢. I've been paying for my own haircuts ever since.

As an avid reader, over the years I've read much on when a boy becomes a man, in particular those written by sons about their fathers. One that has always bothered me was an article I read years ago, that stated that a guy doesn't truly become a man until his father dies. I disagreed with it then, and after thirty years, I disagree even more with it now. For one thing, what about those men in their seventies who have fathers now in their nineties, still alive and well? Are they not men yet? What crap...it's scary how much power and authority the written word has, there might still be folks out there who believe that load of twaddle, just because it's been published.
For me, there was more than just one incident that heralded a coming of age, that underlined I had left boyhood behind.
One such time was when I had chosen to make working on radio towers a profession rather than a weekend hobby, and I was trying to get my new business off the ground, pun intended, with very little in the way of start-up capital. My Dad helped me out, giving me my first climbing belt, first set of tree and pole spurs, and first length of utility rope. He also thought I might need some work pants, so he gave me a few pair of his old army greens. I did need some work clothing, so I was dismayed at first when I found that the pants didn't fit...they were too small. But when I stopped to think about it, my dismay turned to satisfaction. My Dad's pants are too small for me! I Am a Man!
For some guys, they feel like they crossed the threshold of manhood when they lost their virginity. For others, upon supporting themselves with their own paycheck. For still others, it was their first child being born. And for a few, it was when they said "I do." But for me, it was that day trying on my father's cast-off work pants.
What was yours?
