I've been digitizing old 33-1/3 RPM albums the past few weeks. One I ran across that surprised me was the original soundtrack from Brian DePalma's Phantom of the Paradise. DePalma directed (and wrote) this movie right after "Sisters" with Margot Kidder and a one movie prior to "Carrie" with Sissy Spacek. De Palma also wrote the screenplay. I'll leave an analysis of the film to more able film critics (like Wheezer Jay Amicarella) but in listening the the soundtrack once again after 30 years, I thought it was pretty entertaining.
I am not watching Phantom of the Paradise but Carrie or sister were interesting. Well I like DePalma's every drama.

'Paradise' will always touch a soft spot for Wheezers, as it was one of the driving forces behind their 70's era mock band, The Screaming Queens. Some movies slowly obtain cult status, others, like 'Paradise,' start out as cult faves, then fizzle. Nobody remembers it because, although very entertaining at the time, it was dated, tame and overshadowed by reality in just a few years. It's pointedly 'weird' rock bands were outstripped by far by the real deal, and Paul Williams, as the villain, never menaced on screen. Still, there are funny moments, enough to view it as a curio.

No, he wrote it (and Sisters) prior to directing Sisters. And it wasn't one film prior to Carrie... He made Obsession between Phantom and Carrie.
