
On Mar. 28, 1979, the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant experienced a partial meltdown. It was the worst-ever commercial nuclear accident in U.S. history. There were many stories about mutants around the plant in the years that followed. This man, er... men, was/were interviewed after moving from the area in 2002.

Well, almost "Beam me up". How about, "Ride me up"? Japanese scientists are once again looking at developing a space elevator. Up and down the 22,000 mile-long cables — or flat ribbons — will run the elevator carriages, themselves requiring huge breakthroughs in engineering to which the biggest Japanese companies and universities have turned their collective attention.
